Final Picks - 2023 BDR Calendar
Read MorePuppies are playful, curious, and adorable. They also require constant care, devour massive amounts of food, and tend to arrive in bunches, leaving our staff scrambling to create space. We’re always bursting at the seams with puppies. They are expensive to care for, but they are worth every penny and peso. Nothing cures a sour mood like cradling a cuddly pup in your arms or witnessing the magical moment when they meet their forever families.
Kiss came to us from the streets of Mexicali. She was—and is—an adorable pup, but she spent years at the shelter watching potential adopters skip over her. It seemed like Kiss was destined to spend her remaining days at Barb’s, but she never lost hope and we didn’t either. Like so many dogs we’ve had over the years, Kiss’s life changed in a flash one day when her forever family showed up at the shelter. We were thrilled to be Kiss’s bridge from homelessness to a wonderful new life.
Countless homeless and abandoned dogs roam the Puerto Peñasco area. They arrive at our shelter scared, sick, ravenous, dehydrated, injured, abused, and traumatized. Many have suffered unthinkable cruelty. We open our doors to them because we believe all dogs deserve a safe environment, quality food, medical care, and the chance to find happiness. For some dogs, Barb’s provides a permanent sanctuary – a loving home for life. For many others we are a rehabilitative stop on their way to a forever family. But no matter who they are or what condition they‘re in, we promise to provide love, care, and shelter for however long they need.
Calm, cuddly Kobe is one of our longtime residents. He arrived at Barb’s a decade ago, one of 17 dogs from a hoarding situation. The other 16 dogs were adopted, but for unknown reasons Kobe never was. Instead, this friendly boy settled into the love and warmth of the shelter, where he has found a family with Barb, our staff, and his canine companions. It is our honor to care for this sweet gentleman.
Popcorn was discovered at the beach by some local fishermen. She was sickly and weak. The fishermen asked an American for help, and soon Popcorn was transported to Barb’s. We provided Popcorn with the medical treatment, nourishing food, and safe environment she needed to stabilize and recover. From scared and sick to safe and sound, this six-year-old sweetheart is ready for her next step: A forever family!
Mabel was left outside Barb’s a year ago. She was in rough condition. Skittish around people, Mabel wouldn’t let anyone near her for months, although, perhaps intuitively knowing we would help her, she continued to stick near the shelter. We gave her the space she needed and made sure she always had food, water, and a bed outside our doors. Eventually we coaxed Mabel inside and we were able to address her scabies and ticks. Now fully recovered and socialized, Mabel is ready to be adopted by a family that is seeking a very friendly companion.
With her stylish white markings on her right front leg, Cookie is a striking gal, and her sweet and gentle manner makes her popular with people and other dogs. But ten years after being dumped at the shelter, Cookie is still hoping for a forever home. Large breed dogs with dark fur are often overlooked for adoption, but we are blessed to be able to provide Cookie with a loving home for as long as she needs one. In return, she blesses us with her special energy and presence.
01 - [For January] Two things stand out about Mama Coco: her size and her sweetness. Unfortunately, bigger dogs are less likely to be adopted, so Mama Coco has been with us for many years. But as you can tell by her bright smile, her spirit is undiminished. We adore Mama Coco and we love the way she lights up the shelter. She embodies the joyful excitement that marks the start of a new year.
09 - SEPT. - PRINCESS LEA AND PRINCE HARRY
Our royal pair: Princess Lea and Prince Harry. Lea arrived at Barb’s with a litter of puppies. After her pups were adopted, Lea started sharing a kennel with young Harry. The shy lady and energetic young boy became best friends, and they are such a regal and majestic duo that we decided to bestow royal titles upon them. The prince and princess are ready to be adopted and add a splash of royalty to your family!
One earflap up, the other down – Dorothy is ready for anything. Most of all, she’s ready to meet her future family. Not long ago, this friendly youngster arrived at Barb’s as a wee pup with her mother. At the shelter, she got the nourishment, veterinary care, and love she needed to prepare herself for a happy new life. Our mission is to provide a stable, comfortable, caring environment that gives dogs like Dorothy a springboard to a bright future.
Sophie’s family dropped her off at Barb’s because they were moving and couldn’t keep her. Sophie was terribly depressed at first, but she gradually warmed to the loving embrace of the shelter and recovered from her broken heart. Not long afterward, a wonderful family decided to bring her home. We miss her, but we are delighted that sweet Sophie found the loving home she deserved.
Ruby was rescued in the nearby city of Caborca. She is an exceptionally friendly two-year-old gal who loves to play with balls and socialize with people and other dogs. Naturally ebullient, Ruby energizes every environment she’s in. She is available for adoption and ready to light up her future family’s home.
